Palestinian farmers sit in front of a digger being protected by the Israeli military as they protest against the construction of Israel’s controversial West Bank separation barrier in the village of Umm Salamona south of the biblical town of Bethlehem 26 December 2006. Six people were slightly injured when scuffles broke out after a dozen bulldozers, protected by the military, started to tear down trees and raze the farm land near the village. The Palestinians have condemned the barrier, which follows a 650 kilometer (406 mile) route, as an attempt to grab their land and undermine the viability of their promised state. The International Court of Justice issued a non-binding ruling in July, 2004 that parts of the barrier which criss-crosses the West Bank were illegal and should be torn down.
